The Husqvarna Z254 zero-turn mower is a fantastic choice for residential and commercial gardeners alike. It has plenty of power to tackle even the toughest terrain, while high quality, durable parts ensure it will exceed expectations year after year.
It’s worth bearing in mind that there are actually 4 different versions of the Z254, which we’ll look at in a bit. For the time being, this review will focus mostly on the standard version with the 26HP Kohler engine.
Engine and Drive System
The standard Z254 features a hefty 747cc 7000 Series engine from Kohler, which delivers 26HP and boasts a top speed of 6.5 mph. It maintains a steady RPM regardless of the terrain, ensuring a superior cut and healthy engine. It’s capable of mowing through large areas of tall grass in no time, even in wet conditions.
Maintaining the Kohler engine is pretty straight forward and its durable build results in a long life. In addition, the Z254 boasts a maintenance-free transmission, making this a top choice for beginners or those who aren’t overly familiar with maintaining their own mower.
The hydrostatic drive system results in smooth control from the get-go and makes it easy for novices to soon become comfortable operating it. Fan-cooled pumps prevent overheating, further reducing maintenance tasks and increasing the lifespan of the mower.
The Z254 is a powerful zero turn mower, but beginners need not fear. It boasts extremely responsive controls that make maneuvering a breeze. The hydrostatic drive system is operated via the two steering levers, which provide a smooth and controlled experience each time, balancing themselves when pressure isn’t applied.
There’s also a patent-pending automatic parking brake system, which automatically disengages as the steering levers are moved out or in. The parking brake automatically engages when the steering levers are no longer engaged, an excellent safety feature that is also ergonomic. As such, you can be sure the mower won’t move an inch unless you want it to.
A hand-operated control panel is easy to reach on the driver’s right-hand side, giving you full control at your fingertips. It enables you to control the cutting height, ignition, and throttle, and also displays the digital hour meter, which has been pre-programmed with service intervals.
– Cutting Deck
The Z254 boasts a 54” cutting deck that will take care of your yard work in no time. It features 3 Husqvarna Z254 blades that are made from high-quality material and are designed to last.
The stamped cutting deck is reinforced on the leading edge and trim side with heavy flat-stock steel, providing additional strength and durability.
This Husqvarna 54 inch zero turn mower features 6 cutting heights, from 1.5” to 4”, allowing you to get the perfect look each time. It also uses air induction mowing technology to draw air from the top and bottom of the cutting deck. In turn, this improves grass lift and ensures a superior cut time after time.
A built-in deck wash port saves you time and increases the lifespan of your mower. Simply plug in a standard garden hose and blast away any excess cuttings, avoiding blockages in the future. Meanwhile, the spring-assisted deck lift system is conveniently located to the left of the seat, allowing you to lift over obstacles without stopping.
– Design and Extra Features
The build quality of the Z254 is extremely high, with strong materials used throughout. It boasts a rugged frame that can hold up against bumps and knocks, while durable casters keep the wheels firmly in place, preventing wobbling and stability issues.
A number of extra features improve control, lifespan, and safety. The rear engine guard, for example, covers hot surfaces, while adding a layer of protection against bumps. Meanwhile, the removable footplate grants convenient access to the top of the cutting deck.
Rubber bellows on the steering levers not only look refined but also protect the inner mechanism from dust, moisture, and debris. Other small touches are also welcome, such as the handy cup holder located by the seat.
The Z254 is a comfortable mower to use and Husqvarna has included a number of features to make your ride as enjoyable as possible. The 15” vinyl-covered seat is well-padded, with a seat spring to help absorb shocks and vibrations. Unfortunately, it lacks armrests, yet it can slide and lock in place to the position that suits you best.
Besides the seat, comfort is further improved by providing ample legroom, so you won’t be cramped as you mow. The anti-slip foot area makes sure that you won’t have any problem staying in the right place and makes getting off and on the mower easy.
The rider’s seat is isolated from the frame by a number of rubber isolators, which absorb bumps and vibrations, reducing operator fatigue. Finally, all the controls are close to hand, preventing stretching and straining, and all operations can be carried out by hand.
Husqvarna Z254 Attachments
The Husqvarna Z254 is an incredibly versatile mower and there are numerous attachments that can be purchased.
– Mulching kit
This mulching kit is one of the most popular Husqvarna Z254 blade attachments, which transforms your mower into a mulching machine. By mulching, you save time removing the cut grass from your lawn, while adding additional nutrients back into your soil.
The kit includes 2 mulching blades, a mulch plate, and all the hardware you’ll need to mount them. It fits all Husqvarna 54” cutting decks, except for newer ClearCut decks.
– Triple bagging kit
If you don’t plan to mulch but still want to save time raking your lawn and clearing away the cuttings, this triple bagging kit is a top choice. It contains 3 sturdy bins that attach to the rear of your mower, fitted with thick and durable polyester mesh collection bags capable of holding 9 bushels in total.
A handy chute sucks the cuttings into the bags as you trim, with a full bag indicator letting you know when it’s full. Improved airflow results in fuller bags, which are easy to remove and empty due to the built-in collar handles and straps on the bottom. The kit contains everything you need to mount the system with ease.
– LED bumper headlight kit
These headlights are easy to fit and enable you to mow in low light conditions with ease. This is ideal in very hot climates, where it can be preferable to mow your lawn while the sun is low in the sky. The LED bulbs are long-lasting and bright enough to guide your way no matter the conditions, resulting in a safer mower.
The headlights mount onto the front bumper and hook up onto the battery, turning on and off with the ignition. You’ll find all the nuts and bolts you need to mount these lights within the kit.
Be advised that this kit may not fit every model, so be sure to check that yours has a front bumper to fit them in advance.
– Battery charger and maintainer
A healthy mower battery will never let you down, but it’s all too easy to neglect yours, especially over winter. This fully automatic charger and maintainer removes all the stress and worry, making it easy to keep your battery in top condition, no matter the weather. Not only does this prevent flat battery delays, but it also reduces your costs and increases the lifespan of your battery considerably.
It plugs into a standard wall socket and simply needs to be connected to the charging port of your mower. Safety measures prevent short circuits and damage to sensitive electronics.
This handy cover is water-resistant and offers heavy-duty protection against sun damage, inclement weather, dirt, birds, and even tree sap, keeping your mower in top shape. It fits the Z254 like a glove, offering supreme protection, while the elastic cord at the bottom ensures it’ll stay in place no matter the weather.
Moisture build-up inside the cover is prevented by a number of reinforced vents that allow the mower to breathe. It also comes complete with a useful storage bag for when you don’t need to use it.
– Armrest kit
Armrests can provide additional stability and comfort while using your ride-on mower, especially when traversing bumpy terrain. This kit makes it quick and easy to fit armrests to your Z254 with just 6 bolts that are included.
They should fit all Z series Husqvarna models, but be sure to check before purchasing. Also bear in mind that some models come with armrests fitted as standard.
– Rear hitch kit
This useful rear hitch kit is simple to install onto the rear of your mower and enables you to tow a wealth of accessories, transforming your mower into a veritable workhorse. Two mounting bolts are included in the kit, however, it doesn’t include a hitch pin or ball hitch.
Husqvarna Z254 Variations
As previously mentioned, there are 4 variants of the Husqvarna Z254. For the most part, the major difference is the type of engine used. However, there are some other differences as well, which we’ll list here.
So far in this review, we’ve focussed on the standard Z254 with a 26HP Kohler engine. Here are the other three versions.
Despite the slightly lower horsepower of the Briggs & Stratton engine, this model performs just as well as the Kohler engine. The Briggs & Stratton Endurance V-Twin engine is built from quality materials, delivering power and durability by the bag load. On-board engine cooling helps keep it running no matter the conditions.
The engine also features an automatic choke system, making it easy to start each and every time. However, it may require more regular servicing and maintenance than the Kohler engine to keep it in top condition.
Otherwise, this model is more or less the same as the standard version, with just the addition of a front bumper, which alters the styling and allows for the LED headlight kit to be fitted with ease.
Husqvarna Z254F 23HP Kawasaki Engine with ClearCut Cutting Deck
The major difference between the Z254 models and the Z254F models is the new ClearCut fabricated cutting deck. This offers superior airflow and high-performance blades, resulting in the best possible cut each and every time. Indeed, it performs better on uneven and hilly terrain and typically cuts thicker grass better than the standard Z254 models.
The 726cc Kawasaki FR Series engine provides 23HP and is somewhat quieter than both the Kohler and the Briggs & Stratton engines. However, it also requires more maintenance and servicing than the Kohler engine, and valve adjustments are recommended after the first 150 hours.
This model also includes 6 anti-scalp wheels as opposed to the 4 on the standard models. It also has the front bumper, allowing for the headlight kit to be attached. Finally, the Z254F offers a more comfortable seat, with thicker padding and an open back to provide added ventilation.
Husqvarna Z254F 26HP Kohler Engine with ClearCut Cutting Deck
Like the previous model, this one also features the ClearCut cutting deck and shares the same benefits. With the same Kohler engine as the standard model, it also benefits from the easy maintenance that this engine provides. However, it’s not quite as good on larger hills as the Kawasaki version and is a little louder.
Otherwise, this model can be considered the deluxe version of the Z254F. It comes with LED headlamps fitted as standard and cast-iron spindle housings for improved durability.
The star of the show though is the extra comfy chair, with an 18” back compared to the standard 15”, armrests included as standard, a super thick cushion, and an extra soft outer layer.
Boasting a powerful engine, high-quality cutting blades, and easy-to-use controls, the Husqvarna Z254 is among the best residential zero-turn ride-on mowers you can find.
It’s ideal for medium to large plots and can handle various types of terrain. In fact, its high-quality build and features put it on the border between a commercial zero turn mower and a residential one.
Amazingly versatile, the additional attachments mean you can configure your Z254 to suit your specific needs. Plus, with 4 versions available, you can be sure to find the best fit for you.
Suitable for pros and home gardeners with just a little experience, it’s a top choice.
